Eye Candy Pearl Spotlight: THE DODGE PEARL NECKLACE VIA CARTIER

THE DODGE PEARL NECKLACE VIA CARTIER

This storied multi-strand natural pearl necklace is said to have originally been owned by the Russian empress Catherine the Great. The stunning layout was purchased by Cartier after the Russian Revolution in 1917, who was an avid collector of Russian imperial jewelry.

Cartier then sold the necklace to Horace Dodge, founder of the Dodge Motor Company, for $825,000 USD – in today’s dollars, that amounts to a jaw-dropping $70 Million USD.

Common Customer Questions: Where Do The Best Akoya Pearls Come From?

Where Do the Best Akoya Pearls Come From?

Cultured Akoya pearls were first born in Japan around 1912. The “Father of Cultured Pearls” is Kokichi Mikimoto, the man responsible for bringing cultured Akoya pearls to the world.

Today, the Akoya pearl is cultured on pearl farms located in Japan, China and Vietnam.

Japan is still known far and wide as the producer of the finest Akoya pearls in the world.

Akoya pearls are known around the world as having the highest quality luster of all pearl types. The luster is so sharp, shiny and reflective that Akoya pearls are often described as having “Mirror-sharp” or “Ball-bearing” luster.

The cold waters of the Pacific Ocean are the Akoya oyster's special secret for how it creates its "mirror-like" luster. The colder temperatures of the water slow down the oyster's metabolism. This causes nacre secreted around the bead nucleus to get packed very tightly together in concentric layers. The more tightly packed these layers are, the brighter and sharper the pearl's luster.
